The company has successfully delivered projects in ports, airports, land reclamations, infrastructure developments, mining projects and industrial facilities throughout Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas.

One of Cofra's strengths is its ability to mobilise specialised equipment internationally. The installation fleet is designed for containerised transport, allowing projects to be executed efficiently in both established and remote locations.

In addition to installation services, Cofra provides geotechnical support, ground improvement design, project optimisation and construction monitoring. This combination of engineering expertise and practical execution experience allows projects to be developed and delivered under a wide variety of local conditions.

Cofra is flexible in its approach to international projects. Depending on the project size and local conditions, solutions may range from fully mobilised installation spreads to the use of local equipment supported by specialised Cofra installation systems. Technical supervision, training and support of local personnel can also be provided where required.

Can Cofra support the design phase of a project?

Yes.

Cofra regularly supports clients, consultants, developers and contractors during the planning and design phases of ground improvement projects. Early involvement allows alternative improvement methods to be evaluated before key design decisions have been finalised.

Depending on the project requirements, Cofra can assist with feasibility studies, preliminary assessments, settlement analyses of footings, liquefaction evaluations, value engineering exercises and the comparison of alternative ground improvement methods.

By combining geotechnical expertise with practical construction experience, Cofra can help identify opportunities and constraints at an early stage of the project. This often leads to lower project risks, improved constructability and more economical solutions.

Cofra's involvement can range from reviewing geotechnical investigation data and preparing budget estimates to supporting detailed design development and Design & Construct projects.

When should I involve Cofra in a compaction project?

Cofra should ideally be involved during the early planning and design stages of a project. Early involvement allows alternative densification solutions to be evaluated before key design decisions have been finalised.

By reviewing the available geotechnical information, loading conditions, settlement criteria and liquefaction requirements, Cofra can help identify both opportunities and risks before they affect the project budget or schedule. We are also happy to review project specifications and performance requirements to identify potential optimisation opportunities. This may include assessing whether specified requirements are technically achievable, identifying potential risks associated with adverse ground conditions and advising on practical verification methods to demonstrate compliance with the project requirements.

Many ground improvement challenges are created not by the selected technique, but by unrealistic specifications, incomplete ground investigations or verification requirements that do not reflect the actual behaviour of the soil. Early involvement of both designers and contractors often results in more practical specifications, lower project risks and more economical solutions.

What information does Cofra need to evaluate a compaction project?

A complete geotechnical report is not always required to start a discussion. In many cases, a few CPTs, potentially a few grain size distributions, the project location and a brief description of the proposed development are sufficient to perform an initial assessment and identify potentially suitable ground improvement solutions.

The amount of information required depends on the project stage. For a preliminary evaluation, limited information is often sufficient. However, for a detailed budget estimate or quotation, more project-specific information is generally required.

For a preliminary evaluation, the following information is typically helpful:

• Project location
• Description of the planned development
• Geotechnical investigation data, such as CPTs and boreholes with grain size distributions
• Available design information or drawings
• Required treatment depth
• Performance requirements
• Liquefaction requirements, if applicable
• Project schedule and construction constraints
• Site access limitations and environmental requirements

The more information that is available, the more accurately Cofra can assess feasibility, risks, expected performance and likely project costs.

Can Cofra perform trial sections?

Yes.

Cofra frequently performs trial sections as part of the design and optimisation process for compaction projects. Trial sections are often the most effective way to verify design assumptions and determine the most economical treatment programme.

During a trial section, different treatment parameters such as energy levels, grid spacings, hammer configurations or treatment procedures can be evaluated. The achieved improvement is then verified using field testing such as CPTs, density measurements or other project-specific verification methods.

Trial sections are particularly valuable when:

• Soil conditions are variable
• Liquefaction mitigation is required
• Large treatment areas are involved
• Performance requirements are stringent
• Multiple treatment methods are being considered

In many projects, a trial section results in improved performance, reduced treatment quantities and lower overall project costs.

How much do compaction projects cost?

The cost of a compaction project depends on a wide range of factors and cannot be determined solely on the basis of the treatment area.

Important cost factors include:

• Soil conditions
• Required treatment depth
• Selected compaction technique
• Requirements
• Treatment area size
• Project location
• Mobilisation requirements
• Verification testing requirements

For example, shallow densification of a warehouse platform may require a completely different approach from deep liquefaction mitigation beneath a reclamation project. Compaction projects should therefore be evaluated based on the complete ground improvement solution rather than only on production quantities or unit rates.

The most economical solution is not necessarily the technique with the lowest unit rate. Treatment depth, achievable production rates, mobilisation costs, verification requirements and achieved soil improvement often have a much greater influence on the final project cost than the treatment rate alone.

In many projects, compaction remains one of the most economical ground improvement methods available, particularly where loose granular soils require an increase in bearing capacity, a reduction in settlements or mitigation of liquefaction risks.
