In early February 2015, Cofra BV, commenced sand compaction as an integral phase of the extension of the Port of Felixstowe on the east coast of England.
The main contractor for the project is VSBW, a joint venture between Boskalis Westminster and VolkerStevin.
For the reclamation works, sand was pumped in to a level of +2m CD within the newly installed quay walls.
Cofra BV is responsible for compaction of the sand up to -5m CD. Before the permanent works operation, two compaction trials were performed.
One to assess the compaction and determine the working method, and one to assess any influence of CDC on the quay wall.
After both trials were successfully completed, the compaction commenced. The required compaction is achieved using the our 16 tonne CDC hammer attached to a Caterpillar 385.
